I’m taking a side step from my typical homeschool content, to share a DIY recipe that has helped my family’s skin, tremendously!

It took me over three decades to understand a crucial truth: the secret to moisturized and healthy skin goes beyond simply applying lotions. The real game-changer is using the right kind of soap! When I switched to goat milk soap, my family's skin transformation was almost immediate. My daughter's eczema improved significantly, and our skin's texture became much smoother, even during the harshest winter months.

This revelation led me to question: Could other products in our daily routine impact our family’s skin health?

The Power of Homemade Laundry Soap

Laundry soap is the only other soap in constant contact with our skin. Knowing the benefits of goat milk soap, I became obsessed with creating a homemade laundry recipe with my favorite products from @bendsoapcompany.

The recipe is easy to make, and all the ingredients can be found at your local grocery or hardware store. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oils to personalize the soap for a customized scent, and you will never go back to store bought detergent!

Let's get to it!

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup pure baking soda

  • 1 bar grated goat milk soap (shredded), about 1 cup shreds

  • 1/2 cup super-washing soda (laundry booster)

  • 1/2 cup borax

  • 20 drops essential oil (optional, for scent)

Instructions:

  1. Grate the goat milk soap until you have about 1 cup of shreds.

  2. Combine the baking soda, soap shreds, super washing soda, and borax in a container with a lid. Seal the container and shake well until evenly mixed.

  3. Add 20 drops of your favorite essential oil and shake again to distribute (optional for scent).

  4. Use 1 heaping tablespoon per normal size load of laundry.

Notes:

  • Be sure to label and date the container. The detergent can last up to 6 months.

  • Use a bit less detergent for soft water and a bit more for hard water. Adjust the amount based on your needs.

  • Avoid using essential oils that can stain clothes, like cinnamon or clove. Citrus and lavender oils have light, fresh scents that work well.

  • Do not inhale any powder that becomes airborne from shaking the container. Be extremely cautious when opening the lid and handling the powder, especially borax. Have an adult handle and supervise all steps involving borax.
